For this 20th podcast edition, DL!m is glad to welcome a pure product of Chicago, a massive and respected house music rock named Hakim Murphy (Synapsis Rec, Machining Dreams) and as well member of the live duo Innerspace Halflife .

From the old-school vibrance and rythms of the Chicago house music to its renewal and global exposition that we nowadays know, Hakim has been one of the inspiration of the movement since the mid-90s.
For this special occasion, DL!m wanted to please all the music lovers, and invite you to learn a bit more about the story of Mr Murphy with an interview and a mix.
No place for secrets, here is one of the story of US house music.

INTERVIEW  Hakim Murphy

1/ Hello Hakim! We are glad to welcome you on DL! Music. Could you please quickly introduce yourself to those who don’t know you so far?

Hi, I am Hakim Murphy from Chicago. I am a dj/producer/musician who makes House music either solo or with Ike Release as a live PA; we form Innerspace Halflife. I run two record labels named Machining Dreams and Synapsis Records. You can check my happenings at machiningdreams.net

2/ Pure product of Chicago, can you reveal to us how you got involved in the House movement, back in the mid 90s?

Basically I started out dancing at parties, for various reasons I decided to start djing, then I began hanging out with some producers and bought a MPC-2000 which began my production career in the late ’90s.

3/ Any particular DJs/producers that inspired you the most when you started your career as a DJ?

It was a high school class mate who had a mixture with artists like Cajmere, Robert Armani, and Derrick Carter; plus music from various Chicago labels like Cajual, Releif Records, and Dance Mania. This tape really sparked my interest when I was about 14.

3/ House music from Chicago is nowadays known as one of the finest, traditional, but also trendiest movement of this genre. Talking to a specialist, how would you personally describe the evolution of the House Music from your hometown?

To me it is like a lifestyle, either you make music or you talk about making music and some people evolve while others stay in their comfort zones. People are always making tunes in Chicago but only from time to time does it get bright billing on the international stage. Chicago, having a rich musical heritage will continue to evolve, the movement forward will always be around, it is just that will there be enough people behind it to keep it in the light?

4/ Machining Dreams and Synapsis Records are the two labels you founded in 1998, when house music was exponentially growing up and innovating around the globe. Can you tell us a bit more about the similarities and the main differences in terms of musical identity between both labels?

I started my labels in 2008, first, Synapsis Records came about because I was working at a music distributor in Chicago and my friend Inbum Cho wanted to press some vinyl. So we got together and Synapsis was born mostly as an outlet for our music. Then later I decided to get some other Chicago people on the label, to promote some friends whom music I liked a lot. Simultaneously I had an idea for a label which would be mostly for art and limited stamped white label runs and Machining Dreams was born. The main difference between the labels was that Synapsis would have label art and Machining Dreams would be strictly stamped. Now the visions are mostly the same, presenting underground music from wherever, though Synapsis Records will be reserved for Chicago artists and Machining Dreams will have artists from everywhere.

5/ With an active participation to the development of famous labels with some great releases such as Planet Detroit, Plan B Recordings or Sound Black Recordings, can we here talk about a personal wish to “exclusively” collaborate and promote the US house music industry?

Exclusivity does not help comity, I like to build a movement so I collaborate with as much people as I possible can. I have made music with lots of producers, most recently Ike Release, DJ Spider, Chicago Skyway, G Marcell, Specter, and Samuel Andre Madsen. So I am open to do some things.

6/ Following the previous question… what do you think of this sentence: “Amerika provided the atmosphere”. Agree or disagree? Sure you know what we are talking about here…!

Yes, America did provide the atmosphere, especially for creativity. Europeans settled in America for religious freedom, slaves were brought here to build a nation. Years and years of turmoil the system is developed, where lots of underprivileged kids found their way through art, especially, music. The Japanese companies started pouring out drum machines and as those machines became cheaper more people found them and started producing tracks. In the America, before being a electronic musician was fashionable people had to make tracks with the limited amount of equipment available in a home studio. Within this corrupt system that through time have stifled some of its people, these people inturn voice there opinions through musical arts. This art of sound design from the States is a result of this atmosphere which is uniquely American. Experiences in life happen in every society, of course, but the emotion of the music tells no lies.

7/ Let’s talk a bit more about yourself Hakim (without indiscretion). What are the up-running projects you are currently working on for the rest of 2013?

Lots of things going on, first I have a 12" on Synapis Records called "Murph Tone Jack Session" which is out now. Another 12" coming on out on III Rivers from Manchester called "Freeform Terraforming" in early Summer. Also in the fall I will have another 12" called "Fire Bangs" on a Chicago label Teknicolr Music. For my collaboration projects: I will release a cd album with G. Marcell as Resonating on Machining Dreams called "Synonym" in late April. For Innerspace Halflife there will be double 12" coming out in the next few weeks called "Wormhole Transmissions" on Syncrophone, also two 12" singles called "1000 Light Years of Acid House" on Skudge White, and an EP on Finale Sessions called "Village Hidden in the Sound" coming up late Spring. I also have projects upcoming with Specter, Chicago Skyway, and Samuel Andre Madsen.

8/ What is the rest of your agenda for this year? Any chance to catch you in France, or in Europe for another boiling set?

Not sure but as of now, I will be at Freerotation Festival in Wales on July 12th, 13th, and 14th.

Albinos has now been meaning to open communication channels with the Baka pigmy tribe for quite some time, sadly to mixed results… This indeed represents a rather difficult task considering their take on the devil is a tall white man graced with white hair and red eyes! Even though the Baka people is a peaceful one, the legend goes that if they were to catch that albino devil, they would gut its organs out and turn those into an aphrodisiac concoction. Strangely enough, Albinos believes that his music just might be the best language to turn those antagonistic feelings into a communion, he even dreams of performing his tunes to the whole tribe, deep within the jungle, surrounded with exotic birds and the most hungry kind of predators!
Somewhat at times on the verge of irony, his music definitively trades with sketchy, raw and deep emotions, always sincere in the making : always a few steps away from the pre-shaped house and techno idioms, he offers his very own take on dance music, a most peculiar one. Solely using old cheap hardware and an antique Atari, the tracks at hand are one-take live performances, brutal incarnations of Albinos’ simple virgin vision. As the quest for the Baka people goes on, the Antinote team is proud to help shed light on the journey of this obscure producer hailing from the grand north.

Amongst an ocean of re-issues from household names during this classic House music revival we’re currently experiencing, FTTK has dug a little deeper into the history books to unearth a somewhat understated gem in the form of Casey Tucker for the second chapter of For Those that Knoe. The mid nineties was a time when the sounds of Techno and House were being combined, new sub genres were emerging into clubs and DJs were forging their own unique take on dance floor electronic music. After a handful of releases on Probe and before that on Plus 8 with no other than Ritchie Hawtin, Casey Tucker set up Fine Balance Recordings to showcase his unique melodic Tech House solo productions. The label released two EPs (The Carpet Dancer and Accumulated Knowledge) on 12”, both bubbling well under the surface of the mainstream but changes in the music industry and the difficulties many labels felt at that time meant that the label was put on hold. Very much in demand today and extremely rare, FTTK has worked with Casey to dig out the original DAT recordings of those records as well as a fine selection of unreleased material to represent the second chapter of For Those That Knoe.

Previously unreleased, BST is a summertime melodic Techno piece with glorious strings, sun drenched pads, liquid acid funk and sizzling hi hats. It’s a melancholic encapsulation of the end of the dreamy acid rave sound and the purity of the early tech house sounds before digital audio workstations became favoured over their analogue counterparts.

Habit of Awareness, originally released on Accumulated Knowledge has the Casey Tucker swinging rhythm and uplifting acid melodies backed by fizzing distorted chords, archetypal of the 90s yet somehow not stereotypical. It’s bright and cheerful yet still maintains a sense of ethereal soothing with its slow attack dreamy pads and plucked lead.

Finishing off the EP is Momentum; the stand out track from the Carpet Dancer EP has choir style moodscapes, a bouncing bassline and wonderfully syncopated chords that skip across the rhythm like a pebble across a lake’s surface. The opening 2 minutes are an ambient tease switching from those Detroit style chords and formant pads to the bass and into one of Casey’s metallic swinging drum rhythms. Topping off the track is a bubbling delayed twinkling lead adding some additional funk into the mix for good measure.

Not sure if we’ve had any Deso records before… but this is surely worth the check. Some smooth house tracks with a nice twist. Very golden years 1991/1992 bassline driven with not to much hype and hands in the air pressure. Nice one!! Tip

Cork label Basic Grooves keep the focus on Irish talent for their fifth release as label boss Shane Linehan welcomes his namesake Bambrick into the fold for some well judged, atmospheric deepness. "The Process" finds the Waterford based producer veering through dark, heads down terrain though the dubby elements are complemented by a woozy melodic melancholy thanks to the gentle chords that spread out. Linehan maintains the Basic Groove momentum on the flip with a remix that is more stripped back, lending those chords some glowing incandescence, whilst the percussion swells with sweet intensity as it progresses.

Célébrant cette année ses « 25 years of independance », son live in Session à la Machine sera une chance de découvrir l’univers d’un artiste qui a scellé le sort de la Dance Music anglaise.

ADDISON GROOVE Live (50 Weapons/Swamp81)

Porte drapeau d’une Juke à l’européenne, teinté de sonorités House venues de Chicago, il s’est affirmé comme le héros de ce nouveau sous-genre de la Bass Music.

Après un album chez 50Weapons, sa musique n’a pas déviée et reste incroyablement puissante. 
Il fait aujourd’hui des collaborations avec les références du genre comme DJ Rashad.

En exclusivité pour Trax, il fera le 27 avril son premier live depuis l’été dernier avec un set up entièrement renouvelé!

BENJAMIN DAMAGE & DOC DANEEKA Live (50Weapons)

Avec des tubes underground tels que Creeper et Infamous sortis sur le label de Modeselektor, 50 Weapons, Damage et Daneeka s’étaient déjà assurés le soutien du public Uk Bass.

Forts de leurs carrières solos respectives, ils démarrent une collaboration en 2012 avec un premier album "They Live!" qui a attiré sur lui de nombreuses attentions. 

Une façon d’entrer en osmose avec une nouvelle pulsation Techno – on pense à leur collègue Cosmin TRG – et une chaleur propre à la House Music, portée entre autres par la chanteuse Abigail Wyles.

TREVINO DJ set (3024/Klockworks)

Connu sous le nom de Marcus Intalex, pour ses productions Drum and Bass, Trevino poursuit en parallèle une seconde carrière remarquable dans le monde de la Techno.

Mélangeant les influences classiques des deux genres, il les porte à un autre niveau à travers le spectre de la Uk Bass.

Il fait donc partie de ces rares producteurs qui ont eu l’intelligence de se réinventer.

Ce sont 20 ans d’engagement et de musique électronique qu’il nous fera partager à La Machine du Moulin Rouge.
